Offshore bonds
An offshore bond is an investment wrapper issued by a life company outside the UK, holding a choice of underlying funds. It can offer tax deferral and planning flexibility, but eligibility and suitability depend on individual circumstances and tax treatment depends on personal circumstances and may change.
Offshore bonds can be relevant when a high-net-worth investor needs a flexible wrapper around a diversified portfolio, perhaps alongside pensions, ISAs and direct holdings. They are not automatically tax efficient, and product terms, charges, currency and underlying investments require close examination.

This guide sits within our HNW investment planning advice and explains where an offshore bond may fit, how withdrawals are considered and which questions should be addressed before proceeding. Eligibility and suitability depend on individual circumstances, while tax treatment depends on personal circumstances and may change.
Definition
An offshore bond is a life assurance investment wrapper issued outside the UK that holds underlying investments and provides a framework for managing withdrawals and tax planning.
What is an offshore bond designed to do?
An offshore bond is a single policy that can hold a range of funds. The bond provider owns the underlying assets, while the investor has rights under the policy. This administrative structure can make rebalancing within the wrapper straightforward, subject to the provider’s terms and charges.
The wrapper is not itself an investment strategy. Asset allocation, liquidity, currency exposure and manager selection still determine much of the portfolio’s risk. We would assess the policy alongside the rest of a client’s balance sheet rather than treating it as a stand-alone solution.
How do tax deferral and withdrawals work?
Investment growth is generally not taxed as it arises within the policy in the same way as a directly held portfolio. Withdrawals can nevertheless create a chargeable event, and the timing and character of gains need careful modelling before money is taken.
Policy features such as assigning segments, changing ownership or surrendering part of a bond can have different consequences. Advice should account for residence, any transitional treatment of foreign income and gains arising before 6 April 2025, existing losses, other income and the investor’s likely need for capital.
How should you choose an offshore bond policy?
Provider strength, fund range, dealing arrangements, currency options, policy charges and access to independent portfolio management all matter. A low headline charge may not represent the lowest overall cost once fund expenses and transaction costs are included.
We also consider the policy’s jurisdiction, reporting arrangements and what happens if the investor changes country. The right answer may be a different wrapper or a directly held portfolio if transparency, access or control is more important.
How could an offshore bond fit your HNW plan?
An offshore bond may support a staged withdrawal plan, family wealth transfer discussion or a portfolio held across several currencies. Those uses need to be coordinated with trusts, wills and any business or pension interests, with appropriate specialist input where required.
The value of the wrapper is therefore contextual. We document the purpose, expected holding period, access needs and downside tolerance before recommending a policy, and revisit the structure as circumstances change.

- Capital is at risk. The value of investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise. You may not get back the full amount invested. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are offshore bonds tax free?
No. Tax may be deferred in some circumstances, but withdrawals and other chargeable events can create tax. The outcome depends on personal circumstances and current rules.
Can I hold any fund in an offshore bond?
No. The available range is set by the provider and may include managed funds, index funds and cash options. Charges and dealing terms vary.
Can an offshore bond be used for estate planning?
It may form part of a wider estate plan, but ownership, policy segmentation and trust arrangements need specialist advice and should be coordinated with legal planning.
Is an offshore bond suitable for every investor?
No. Suitability depends on objectives, access needs, risk tolerance, tax position, charges and the wider portfolio.
